Columbus, Georgia: The Fountain City

Columbus, Georgia Columbus is the county seat of Muscogee County, Georgia, located across the Chattahoochee River from the Phenix City. It was founded in 1828 and marks the beginning of the navigable waterway for the river. The town takes its name from explorer Christopher Columbus and was recently ranked fourth on Best Life magazine's list of best cities in which to raise a family. Its nickname, Fountain City, comes from the fountains along Broadway and Uptown that were refurbished at the suggestion of local pastor Othell Hand in 1966.

Columbus, GA's economy was originally based around cotton farming and trading, an industry that was supported by shipping along the river and eventually evolved to include textile milling. During the civil war Columbus expanded its manufacturing capacity to include steel and shipbuilding and became an important supplier of the Confederate Forces. Today Columbus' industry has moved away from textile manufacturing to include insurance, high-tech, and business.

Columbus, Georgia is also supported by its association with the nearby Fort Benning, a United States Army training facility with a population of over 100,000, a number so large as to even rival Columbus' own population of 186,000. Fort Benning is home to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, Sniper School, Ranger School, Airborne School, Pathfinder School, and numerous battalions of infantry and special forces soldiers. The base in which they live is so enormous that it takes up most of the rest of Muscogee County.

Fort Benning doesn't have a monopoly on education, however. Columbus, GA is home to Columbus State University as well as several technical colleges. It is also famous for being the city in which Dr. John Pemberton developed Coca Cola in 1860. That site is commemorated by a science center. The "Last Land Battle Fought in the War Between the States" is also memorialized in Columbus, which further honors its military history with the National Infantry Museum and the National Civil War Naval Museum.
