A Brief History of Columbus, GA

The Georgia Legislature founded Columbus in 1828. Columbus had been settled at the end of the Chattahoochee River and on the last stretch of the Federal Road before entering Alabama. The city had been named after Christopher Columbus.The original plan at the time was to have the town overlooking the river, but as a result, the Creek Indians were forced to be removed in 1836.
