In the last few decades we have become so much more aware of human's effects on the environment than you ever have been before. We are conscious that everything from the car we drive to the amount of time that we leave the lights on can not only affect the lifespan of plants and animals, but our own health as well. Many people now suffer from depression Toronto based to repertory issues in Los Angeles and it's important that we all continue to remain informed about the newest environmental research. For those living in or visiting the Columbus region there is an amazing resource in the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center.
Oxbow Meadows is a part of Columbus State University and is situated along the Chattahoochee River in the southern end of the city. There are many different ways that you can experience nature in this wildlife sanctuary. Nature walks are held on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from September to May and begin at 8am. This allows you to explore the area with a staff member who can answer all of your questions. If you're an animal enthusiast who sells horse waterers or just loves seeing interesting creatures you can bring along your binoculars and field guide of the area.
They say that the best gardens are built usually with plants that are native to the area. If you are an avid gardener and want to meet others with this interest you can join the Lynn Haven Wildlife Garden Club, which meets once a month. Or if instead you are more interested in our feathered friends there is the Columbus Audubon Society. Many people from all walks of life, including those who work in food media and those who run their own small business, come for the bird watching at Oxbow Meadows.
There are many events and festivals hosted by the Environmental Center throughout the year that can be fun for the whole family. Tricks, Treats and Trails takes place at the end of October and combines Halloween fun with educational games. Insectival is meant to tell you everything that you've ever wanted to know about different butterflies, bees, and other creepy-crawlers. This could be a fun day for those still in diapers all the way up to those that are retired.
As part of the university, there is of course always several research projects that are going on throughout the center at all times. There are many classes and seminars for educators and their students that can support anywhere from thirty to three hundred participants. And you could fill a sheaf of paper with all that you can learn here in just one day.
